Coal miner dies; mine shut down

GRUNDY - A coal miner was killed Monday in an underground mining accident, officials said.

Mike Abbott, spokesman for the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy, said the accident occurred about 10:15 a.m. at Crystal Bay Corp.'s Mine No.2 in Buchanan County.

Abbott said details of the accident were sketchy, but he said it occurred during the hauling of coal.

The victim, identified by Buchanan Funeral Services as Roger Osborne of Garden, was transported to Buchanan County General Hospital in Grundy, where he was pronounced dead at 11:30 a.m.

Abbott said the department closed the mine to secure the area for an investigation.

Boy, 12, charged in burning of teen

RICHMOND - A 12-year-old boy was charged with malicious wounding for allegedly pouring gasoline on a Chesterfield County teen-ager and setting him on fire.

The boy, whom police have not identified because of his age, was arrested at his school Monday and taken to the Chesterfield Juvenile Detention Center.

On Oct. 16, gasoline was poured on a 13-year-old Ettrick teen-ager's pants leg, and the pants were set on fire. The victim suffered second- and third-degree burns on one leg but probably will not need a skin graft, his mother said Monday.

``I just thank God that it wasn't worse,'' she said.

The victim, who was in Ettrick visiting his grandmother, was lured to a back yard and attacked, police said. Police said the boys knew each other and that the attack may have been prompted by an earlier argument.

There was no evidence to suggest that the incident was in imitation of a similar incident in nearby Hopewell, in which brothers ages 11 and 10 threw gasoline on a 3-year-old and set him on fire.

Ex-mansion boss guilty of exposure

RICHMOND - The former director of the state executive mansion has pleaded guilty to indecent exposure.

Craig Westburg Henson, 36, was arrested Sept. 26 with another man and charged with sodomy, a felony.

Henson pleaded guilty to indecent exposure, a misdemeanor, on Friday and was fined $100 and ordered to pay $96 in court fees.

Henson, appointed to the executive director's job by Gov. George Allen, resigned two days after his arrest. He supervised a seven-member staff in coordinating social events at the mansion where the governor and his family live.
