Salem police investigator M.H. Lutz said Ollie May Harless, 55, of Otter Avenue was walking north on the northbound shoulder about 3:30 p.m. As she approached Braeburn Drive, a car struck her from behind, throwing her over a guardrail. Lutz estimated Harless landed about 30 feet down a steep embankment. A white leather purse and a red coat were found near the guardrail.
Harless was pronounced dead at the scene. Salem rescue workers used ropes and a large wire basket to retrieve her body.
Lutz said the driver of the car was not injured. Her car had a broken right headlight and a dented hood.
The driver's name was not released. Lutz described her as very shaken up and said she was taken to Lewis-Gale.
Lutz said he was investigating the cause of the accident. He said he did not know if charges would be filed against the driver.
