CAVE SPRING GOLFERS 3RD IN STATE PLAY

Cave Spring shot a final-round 319 to finish in third place Tuesday at the Group AAA state golf championships in Hampton.

The Knights, one shot off the pace after Monday's first round, finished with a two-round total of 624, five strokes behind champion Mills Godwin and four shots behind Cox.

Among the individual leaders, Cave Spring's Victor Garcia finished in a group of three in third place. Garcia shot a 4-over-par 75 on Tuesday to go along with Monday's 74 to finish with a 149 total.

Cave Spring's top four on Tuesday were Garcia, Doug Kinney (77-80-157), Chad Williams (79-82-151) and Scott Bailey (90-82-172). Bryan Staggs followed his 75 from Monday with a 91.

Matt Paulson of Cox was the medalist with a 71-73-144, one stroke better than James Madison's Chad Moseley (75-70-145)

In other sports in the region:

Tommy Lesperance shot a 2-over-par 73 and Nick Varney fired a 74 as three-time defending champion Glenvar took the lead after one day of the Group A golf tournament at the Green Hills Country Club in Stanardsville.

The Highlanders, who today will try to win their fourth straight state title, recorded a four-man total of 304 and are six shots ahead of second-place William Monroe. Ray Harrell shot a 77 and Andy Shelor an 80 for Glenvar.

Lesperance is tied with three other players - William Monroe's Bill Donathan, Northampton's Gilbert Bell and Stonewall Jackson's Troy Copenhaver - atop the individual leaderboard.

Among individuals from Timesland, Andrew Wagner of Giles shot 79, Highland's Eric Hook shot 78, and Robert Boone of Galax and Radford's Eric Merkt recorded 83s.

Cave Spring's third doubles team of Lisa Wood and Kristen Grunwald posted the Knights' only individual victory in an 8-1 loss to Woodbridge in the semifinals of the Northwestern Region tennis tournament in Lynchburg. Wood and Grunwald defeated Alicia Brown and Jeannette Ostergaard 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Cave Spring finished its season 9-3. The regional championship match pits Woodbridge (14-0) against E.C. Glass, a 9-0 semifinal winner over C.D. Hylton.

Cave Spring's top doubles team of Alicia Todd and Debra Masters lost for the first time in 13 matches this season with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat to Woodbridge's Sara Thayadrasat and Heather Dansforth in the region championship.

Roanoke defeated Eastern Mennonite 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer tournament at Harrisonburg. Todd Hallauer scored for the Maroons and Keith Arnott assisted. Goalkeeper Rick Keeley made three saves and recorded the shutout.

In another first-round match, Randolph-Macon (14-4-1) eliminated Washington and Lee 4-0 behind a goal and an assist from Mike Henning. The Generals are (7-6-2).

Roanoke defeated Virginia Wesleyan 3-1 in the first round of the ODAC field hockey tournament in Norfolk. Lee Moody, Christine Boyle and Allie Oglesby each scored for the Maroons.

Roanoke College scored two goals in overtime and advanced in the ODAC women's soccer tournament with a 2-0 first-round win. Roanoke (10-4-2, fourth seed) got goals from Julie Struthers and Lisa Franzino. The Maroons outshot Lynchburg 21-3 and Kara Hedges recorded her ninth shutout of the season.

In other first-round action, freshman Erica Reineke scored two goals and assisted three others to send Washington and Lee (10-4) to a 6-0 win over Guilford in Lexington. In one season, Reineke has broken the Generals' career scoring record with 18 goals and 10 assists.

At Radford, Lindsay Watson made eight saves for her fifth shutout of the season as Radford (8-7) topped Longwood College 2-0 in field hockey.

Roanoke's Chip Sullivan and partner John Stone of Williamsburg lost in a playoff for the second year in a row to Rick Shuler and Mark Everson in the Mid-Atlantic Two-Man Team Championship golf event in Front Royal.

Shuler birdied the second playoff hole to give the Manassas tandem a two-shot victory. Sullivan and Stone led after Monday's first round but were penalized a stroke for signing an incorrect scorecard.
