REPORTED EARNINGS

Buffets Inc.

Buffets Inc., Eden Prairie, Minn., operator of Old Country Buffet restaurants, reported third-quarter net earnings of $6.1 million, or 19 cents per share, on sales of $100.5 million, compared with year-earlier $5.6 million, or 18 cents, on sales of $85 million. For the nine months, earnings were $19.1 million, or 60 cents per share, on sales of $311.9 million, compared with year-earlier $15.3 million, or 50 cents, on sales of $251.1 million.

Caterpillar Inc.

Caterpillar Inc., Peoria, Ill., parent of Carter Machinery Co. of Salem, reported third-quarter profit of $244 million, or $1.20 per share, on sales of $3.39 billion, compared with year-earlier profit of $432 million, or $2.13 per share, on sales of $2.75 billion. For the nine months, profit was $676 million, or $3.32 a share, on sales of $10.06 billion, compared with $533 million, or $2.64, on sales of $8.17 billion.

Coastal Corp.

Coastal Corp., Houston parent of ARN Coal Co. and Coastal Coal Sales Co. of Roanoke, reported third-quarter net earnings of $26.6 million, or 21 cents per share, on revenues of $2.68 billion, compared with year-earlier net loss of $11.4 million, or 15 cents, on revenues of $2.31 billion. For the nine months, earnings were $150.8 million, or $1.31 per share, on revenues of $7.86 billion, compared with $39.9 million, or 34 cents, on revenues of $7.59 billion.

CSX Corp.

CSX Corp., Richmond transportation and real estate company with operations in Western Virginia., reported third-quarter net income of $177 million, or $1.68 per share, on revenues of $2.47 billion, compared with year-earlier $63 million, or 61 cents, on revenues of $2.24 billion. For the nine months, net earnings were $413 million, or $3.94 per share, on revenue of $7.07 billion, compared with $208 million, or $2 per share, on revenues of $6.63 billion.

Dominion Resources

Dominion Resources Inc., Richmond parent of Virginia Power, reported third-quarter net income of $161.3 million, or 94 cents per share, on revenues of $1.21 billion, compared with year-earlier $199 million, or $1.20, on revenues of $1.29 billion. For the nine months, net income was $438.9 million, or $2.59 per share, on income of $3.49 billion, compared with $424.6 million, or $2.57, on revenue of $3.40 billion.

Eastman Kodak

Eastman Kodak Co., Rochester, N.Y., parent of Qualex Inc. of Roanoke, reported third-quarter net earnings of $193 million, or 57 cents per share, on sales of $3.53 billion, compared with a net loss of $68 million, or 23 cents, on sales of $3.19 billion a year earlier. For the nine months, net earnings were $539 million, or $1.89 a share, on revenues of $9.71 billion, compared with a net loss of $1.72 billion, or $1.29 per share, on sales of $9.18 billion.

Fieldcrest Cannon

Fieldcrest Cannon Inc., Eden, N.C., textile maker operating a towel mill in Henry County, reported third-quarter net income of $8.5 million, or 68 cents per share, on sales of $279.3 million, compared with year-earlier $7.9 million, or 60 cents, on sales of $256.7 million. For the nine months, net income was $20.7 million, or $1.71 per share, on sales of $766.4 million, compared with a net loss of $51.6 million, or $4.27, on sales $717.2 million.

Flowers Industries

Flowers Industries Inc., Thomasville, Ga., baker with retail and distribution facilities in Roanoke, reported first-quarter net income of $6.2 million, or 17 cents per share, on sales of $233.5 million, compared with year-earlier $4.7 million, or 13 cents, on sales of $217.4 million.

Ingersoll-Rand Co.

Ingersoll-Rand Co., Woodcliff Lake, N.J., operator of a rock drill division in Roanoke, reported third-quarter net earnings of $48.4 million, or 46 cents per share, on sales of $1.11 billion, compared with year-earlier $35.2 million, or 33 cents per share, on sales of $973.5 million. For the nine months, earnings were $113 million, or $1.26 a share, on sales of $3.27 billion, compared with $74.8 million, or 71 cents, on sales of $2.93 billion.

Modine Manufacturing

Modine Manufacturing Co., Racine, Wisc., maker of heating and ventilation equipment with operations in Buena Vista, reported second-quarter net earnings of $16.8 million, or 55 cents per share, on sales of $221.8 million, compared with year-earlier $11.6 million, or 39 cents, on sales of $157 million. For the six months, earnings were $31.6 million, or $1.04 a share, on sales of $430.2 million, compared with $22.4 million, or 74 cents, on sales of $304.1 million.
