GILES TOES THE LINE TO DEFEAT RADFORD

The Giles Spartans made 11 of 12 free throws in the second half Tuesday night to defeat Radford 55-40 in a Three Rivers District girls' basketball game.

Giles (11-6 overall, 4-2 district) made 21 of 29 free throws for the game.

Heather Wilburn had 16 points for the Spartans, and Keli Ratcliffe contributed 13 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.

Radford (7-11, 0-6) got 14 points from Crystal Hubbard and 13 from Mary Morton.

TAZEWELL - Crystal Noles scored 18 of her 20 points in the second half to lead a Demons rally in this non-district game.

Noles scored 11 points in the fourth quarter as Christiansburg rallied from a 40-34 deficit. The Demons took the lead with one minute left in the game and led by as many as five points down the stretch.

Maureen Jackson's 20 points shared game-high honors with Noles.

Suzanne Groseclose led Tazewell (8-9) with 15 points. Rebecca Pruitt and Amanda Peery each added 11.

BLUEFIELD - Lisa Price scored seven of her game-high 24 points in overtime as the Indians held on to defeat Graham in a thrilling non-conference game.

Blacksburg led 52-49 late in the game, but Tamala Oakes, who scored 23 points to lead Graham, hit a 3-pointer with six seconds left to tie the game and send it to overtime.

In the overtime, Price hit four of five free throws and Amanda Hoover hit a free throw to help the Indians stave off the upset bid by Graham (5-13).

Price and Oakes engaged in a shootout throughout the game. Price scored 15 of her 24 in the first half and Oakes scored 13 of her 23 in the first half to lead Graham.

April Rogers added 13 points for the Indians. Kristi Maupin and Beverly Proffitt had 10 each for Graham.

MONETA - Cotrena Liggon scored eight of her game-high 18 points in a decisive third-quarter run as Amherst came from behind to defeat Staunton River in a Seminole District game.

Staunton River (10-7, 10-7), which led 21-10 at halftime, was outscored 28-14 in the second half. The Golden Eagles were led by Beth Davis and Courtney Hurd, who scored 10 points each.

BUCHANAN - Angie Johnson's basket with less than 30 seconds left gave James River a two-point lead and that held up as the Knights went on to the Pioneer District victory over Craig County.

The Knights (5-13, 3-6) led most of the game, thanks to Tiffany Cox, who scored 10 of her team-high 15 points in the first half.

Craig County (6-10, 6-6) managed to rally in the fourth quarter as the Rockets made 11 of 12 free throws to help tie the game at 39. Chrissy Robertson scored 10 of her game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter, including eight free throws, to help bring the Rockets back in the game.

Johnson, who scored 13 points, broke the tie as the Knights held on for the victory.

SHAWSVILLE - Toree Morris and Marilea Hale led a third-quarter charge as the Highlanders pulled away to the non-district win.

Hale scored six of her game-high 23 points in the period while Hale scored half of her 14 as the Highlanders turned a 27-20 halftime advantage into a 44-26 lead. Glenvar (15-2) began hitting its outside shots after halftime and forced the Shawnees into seven third-quarter turnovers.

Shawsville (7-10) was led by Robin Burdette's 11 points.

GALAX - Sparked by freshmen Tiffany Williams and Erin Kyle, the Maroon Tide used a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter to beat the Green Wave and reclaim the top spot in the Mountain Empire District.

Narrows used a triangle-and-two defense for most of the game in an attempt to slow Jaclyn Dickens and Tammy Cox, but Williams and Kyle combined for 25 points.

With 2 minutes, 55 seconds to play, Galax (14-3, 6-1) began its game-breaking run with a layup from Candy Owen to push its lead to eight points and pull Narrows (10-7, 5-2) out of the triangle-and-two.

Dickens made a shot and Williams scored on a three-point play to push the lead to 13 points.

Williams led Galax with 13 points and Cox and Kyle scored 12.

Suzanne Webb led Narrows with 16 points and Melissa Lucas added 11.
