WalkAmerica prizes

BLACKSBURG - Rock 105, WVVV (104.9 FM) has free music, T-shirts, dinners, movie tickets and other prizes Saturday, Oct. 29, for those who take part in the March of Dimes WalkAmerica.

Registration is at 9 a.m., and the walk starts at 10 a.m. at Gilbert Linkous Elementary School on Toms Creek Road.

The walk helps raise money to foster healthy babies by reducing birth defects. The station hopes to sign up at least 105 sponsored walkers.

Missionary workshop

NEW RIVER - First Missionary Baptist Church holds a missionary workshop Saturday, Oct. 29, at 10 a.m. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.

The workshop includes a complimentary luncheon and is scheduled to conclude by 3 p.m. Members of area churches are invited to participate.

Parent representative

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors seeks a parent representative to serve a two-year term on the Comprehensive Services Act for At Risk Youth and Family Community Policy and Management Team.

The team is charged with creating a collaborative system of services and funding that is child-centered, family-focused and community-based. Eligible applicants must be registered voters and in good tax standing. Applicants may not be employees of any public or private program that serves children and families.

Interested applicants should send a letter of intent to Betty S. Thomas, County Administrator, P.O. Box 806, Christiansburg, Va. 24073-0806 by Monday, Nov. 7.

Book discussion

CHRISTIANSBURG - A panel discussion, "Should the book 'Daddy's Roommate,' be kept in the children's section of the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library?" will be held Monday, Nov. 7, 7 p.m., in the Falling Branch Elementary School cafeteria, 735 Falling Branch Road.

Panel members will include Karen Dillon, director of the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library; Nita McNerlin, a Blacksburg parent who has petitioned for the book's removal; and a representative of the Commonwealth Attorney's office.

The forum is presented by the Montgomery County Council on Human Relations.
