Ice cream has sickened 5 Virginians

RICHMOND - There have been five confirmed cases of Virginians becoming ill from eating Schwan's ice cream in recent weeks, and illnesses in 22 others probably were due to consuming the salmonella-contaminated product, the state Health Department said Wednesday.

The five Virginians involved in the laboratory-confirmed cases are from Roanoke, Roanoke County, Virginia Beach (two cases) and Page County. Their illnesses occurred between Sept. 11 and Oct. 19, said Dr. Suzanne R. Jenkins, assistant state epidemiologist.

The state Health Department asks that people contact their local health departments if they have had salmonella-poisoning symptoms - diarrhea, fever and, occasionally, vomiting - and had consumed Schwan's ice cream products between early September and mid-October.

Worker dies in fall into smokestack

RICHMOND - Rescuers rappelled down the inside of a 200-foot high smokestack at a Virginia Power plant in an unsuccessful attempt to rescue a worker who had fallen in.

The man apparently fell from the rim of the brick smokestack as he was preparing to lower himself into the stack Tuesday to install emission monitoring equipment. His name was not released.

The man, said to be in his 20s, apparently fell about 75 feet before being stopped by his safety line. He was dead when rescuers reached him.

Officials said the cause of death was not known.

Suspended student with rifle arrested

VIRGINIA BEACH - A suspended 18-year-old high school student armed with a loaded assault rifle was arrested shortly after he drove to the school looking for the principal, police said.

Police spokesman Mike Carey said the student wanted to discuss his suspension with Principal Ramona Stenzhorn but apparently didn't have an appointment with her.

He was arrested by Officer J.R. Johnson shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday after Johnson stopped the student's car in the parking lot of Salem High School, Carey said.
