WRECK ON CURVY ROAD HOSPITALIZES 3

A crash on Twelve O'Clock Knob Road on Wednesday night sent three people to the hospital.

The car was traveling up the mountain road from Bent Mountain Road when it entered two curves in the 5900 block. Roanoke County police Officer Rick Ruggieri said the car made the first curve but fishtailed off the second one, struck a tree and rolled twice down a steep embankment.

Rescue workers had to remove the car's top to free the backseat passenger. He was being treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital for possible back and abdominal injuries late Wednesday, Ruggieri said.

The two people in the front seat also were taken to the hospital and were treated for minor injuries. Ruggieri did not release the victims' names.

Leonard Cary Jr., who lives nearby, said this was the second accident he has seen in the eight months he has lived there.

"It's that time of year - the leaves fall, maybe it rains a little ... people lose sight of the road, hit a turn and they're gone."

Cary said many drivers who aren't familiar with the winding road drive at excessive speed around tight corners.

"We need guardrails all up and down this road," he said.
