AROUND TOWN

SAR honors area detectives

Rick Moorer, Roanoke County police detective, and Timothy Carroll, Salem police detective, each recently accepted the Sons of the American Revolution National Law Enforcement Medal.

They were cited for their "outstanding performances as public safety officers," according to a press release.

Carroll helped solve a series of armed robberies and rapes that led to a 108-year prison sentence for the convicted.

In addition to his detective work, Moorer's fishing clinic for children was lauded as a crime prevention effort with young people in the community.

Sister city group holding flea market

The Roanoke Pskov Sister City Committee will sponsor a giant flea market sale in the parking lot of Patrick Henry High School Saturday.

Proceeds will be used to supply Pskov's hospital and cancer clinic with medication that is needed during Russia's political and economic transformation.

Two Roanoke doctors, Hugh Wells and Larry Dennis, went to Pskov to observe and work in the Pskov City Hospital. They subsequently sponsored a visit of two doctors and a nurse practitioner from Pskov to observe the daily procedures and the latest medical equipment and techniques.

Natasha Petersen, Roanoke-Pskov Committee chairperson, will deliver medication to Pskov during a two-week trip to Russia early next year.

For more information, call Petersen at 343-5793.
