HIGH SCHOOLS

Galax won its sixth straight Mountain Empire District boys' cross country title and its first girls' title at New River Trail State Park in Galax.

Jamar Bryson ran the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 41 seconds as the Maroon Tide placed seven runners in the top 10 to defeat Grayson County and Fort Chiswell.

Galax and Grayson County will advance to the Region C meet Nov.2 in Shawsville. Jeremy Gravely of Fort Chiswell will advance individually as an individual qualifier.

Kristy Ambrister of Fort Chiswell ran the course in 23:27 to win the girls' race. Galax and Fort Chiswell's girls' teams will advance to the Region C meet.

In Jonesville, Lord Botetourt's Mark Sweeney had a 154 two-day total to wind up eighth in the Group AA golf state tournament completed Tuesday. Rockbridge County's Eric Reynolds, another Blue Ridge District entry, wound up with a 157, tied for ninth place with five others. Robby Burton of Martinsville, the only other Timesland entry, shot 175.

At Glenvar, the Highlanders and Bath County won team titles in the Pioneer District cross country championships.

In the boys' division, Bath County placed five runners in the top 10 to beat Parry McCluer and Glenvar. Chris Merrill of Covington was the individual winner, covering the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 11 seconds.

Trish Nervo of Glenvar was the top girls' finisher with a time of 17:49, leading the Highlanders to the team title. Bath County was second.

The top two teams and top 10 individuals not on those teams advance to the Region C meet in Shawsville.

Kevin Nolan finished the 3.1-mile course at Radford University in 16:46 as Christiansburg won its sixth straight New River District boys' cross country title and its second straight girls' title.

The Blue Demons edged Blacksburg 25-31. Carroll County finished third at 84.

All three teams will advance to the Region IV meet Nov.4 in Bristol.

Sarah Hendricks of Blacksburg won the girls' race in 19:46 but Christiansburg slid past Blacksburg 26-29. Both teams will advance to the Region IV meet.

Northside won the boys' title and William Byrd captured the girls' championship at the Blue Ridge District cross country meet at Covington.

Stuart Bray of Northside completed the 3.1-mile course in 16:24. Alleghany finished second, followed by William Byrd, Lord Botetourt, Salem and Rockbridge County. Jason Herron, Chris Barba and Jason Smith, all of Salem, will advance as individual qualifiers.

Northside, Alleghany, William Byrd and Lord Botetourt will advance to the Region III meet Nov. 2 at William Campbell High School in Naruna.

Johanna Fisher of Salem won the girls' competition with a time of 19:40, but Jessica Webber of William Byrd finished second to help the Terriers win the title. Alleghany finished second and Northside was third, followed by Salem and Lord Botetourt.

William Byrd, Alleghany, Northside and Salem will advance to the Region III meet. Meredith Hays and Erin Foxx of Rockbridge County and Heather Chaffin and Lauren Carr of Lord Botetourt will advance as individual qualifiers.

Floyd County had both individual winners and finished first in the boys' team competition in the Three Rivers District cross country meet. Ben Cooke led Floyd County's boys team by taking individual honors, finishing the 3.1-mile course in 17:20. His teammate, Jason Morisco, finished second.

Floyd County's Johanna Neumann won the girls' individual competition in 20:44, but Giles County had five of the top 10 finishers to win the team title.
