IN SERVICE

AIRMAN BRYAN TOMFORDE, son of Marsha Tomforde of Salem and Tommy Tomforde of Henry, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command in Orlando, Fla.

Tomforde, a 1993 graduate of Franklin County High School, will be stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, based in San Diego.

PFC. ERIN R. BARGER, son of Kay Atkins of Salem, recently completed recruit training and was promoted to his present rank at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

ARMY CAPT. LAFONDA JERNIGAN-EDGE, daughter of Bill and Katie Jernigan of 3120 Kirkland Drive N.W., has been promoted to commander of Headquarters Company 194th Maintenance Battalion in Camp Humphrey in Korea. She graduated from William Fleming High School and North Carolina A&T State University, where she was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1988 through the ROTC program.

STAFF SGT. ROBERT W. STUMP has become an Air Force recruiter in Roanoke. He comes from Edwards Air Force Base in California, where he had been stationed since 1991 as an aircraft armament systems specialist. Stump, who joined the Air Force in 1986, also has served in Saudi Arabia, England and Korea.

SEAMAN APPRENTICE SONDI E. ABBOTT, daughter of Susan E. and Lowell E. Abbott Sr. of Salem, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, Fla.

RESERVE SGT. SUSAN V. KLEINZ, daughter of Charles E. and Barbara Brady of Roanoke, recently received top honors in the 1994 Philip A. Connelly Award Competition recognizing the best dining facilities in the Army.

Kleinz is a food service specialist with the 2nd Battalion, 318th Regiment, an Army Reserve unit in Dublin. She received honors in the Army Reserve Field Kitchen Category.

The Connelly competition is sponsored by the International Food Service Executives Association and the Department of the Army. The two agencies combine to send five teams to Army dining rooms around the world. There they evaluate each facility on food preparation, service, cleanliness and innovativeness in serving.

PVT. RANDY P. STUBSTAD, son of Patricia B. Ilgenfritz of Salem and William Stubstad of Milton, Fla., completed basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Stubstad is a 1991 graduate of Salem High School.

AIRMAN 1ST CLASS NATHANIEL B. GILL, son of Temple J. Jackson of Roanoke, graduated from the aircraft pneudraulic systems course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas. He is a 1992 graduate of William Fleming High School.
