NARROWS STOPS ROCKY GAP, 65-46

Suzanne Webb scored 18 points and Melissa Lawrence added 16 to lead Narrows to a 65-46 victory over Rocky Gap in a Mountain Empire District game Thursday night.

Narrows used a decisive 10-0 run in the third quarter to take control of the game. Lawrence scored eight of her 16 in the third as Narrows outscored the Eagles 18-7 in the quarter.

The Green Wave got 15 points from Melissa ``Bud'' Lucas.

Rocky Gap (6-12 overall, 4-4 in the district) was led by Amanda Clark, who scored 15 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had four steals. Michelle Sarver added 13 points for the Eagles.

Galax 60

Bland 23

BLAND - The Maroon Tide took a 22-7 first-quarter lead and never looked back as it toppled the Rockets in a Mountain Empire District game.

Tammy Cox, the district's leading scorer, had 12 of her 14 points in the third quarter for Galax (14-3, 6-1).

Shannon Enoch and Rae Romano led Bland (0-16, 0-8) with six points each.

Fort Chiswell 66

Grayson County 39

MAX MEADOWS - Jenny Porter scored 15 points and Jennifer Sparks added 13 to lead the Pioneers to a Mountain Empire District victory over the Blue Devils.

Fort Chiswell (5-13, 4-4) led 33-11 at the half and cruised to its second victory of the week.

Lindsey Carico led Grayson County with 10 points.

Floyd County 75

Radford 20

RADFORD - The Buffaloes used a variety of presses to force numerous turnovers and create easy baskets as they took a 26-2 first-quarter lead and cruised to the Three Rivers District victory.

Floyd County (18-0, 6-0), Timesland's top-ranked team, was led by Sara Conner, who scored 11 points. The Buffaloes did not have another scorer in double figures, although every contributed points.

Floyd County also shot well for the game, making 33 of 58 field-goal attempts.

Radford (7-12, 0-7) was led by Crystal Hubbard's 12 points.

Giles 41

Shawsville 27

PEARISBURG - Heather Wilburn scored nine of her game-high 15 points in the third quarter as the Spartans outscored the Shawnees 21-6 in a Three Rivers District game.

Kelly Williams added eight of her 12 points in the third quarter as Giles (12-6, 5-2) opened a 34-21 lead and put away Shawsville (7-11, 2-4).

Liberty 48

AMHERST - The Minnettes turned up the pressure and pulled away in the third quarter for a Seminole District victory.

Amy Baxter had three steals in the third as Liberty (12-5, 12-5) used its fast break to outscore the Lancers 17-9.

Felicia Miller scored 19 points and Kelly Worley had 10 for Liberty. Holli Rice scored 10 for Amherst County (10-8).

Staunton River 60

Buckingham 26

BUCKINGHAM - The Golden Eagles built a 28-7 halftime advantage and left the Knights in the dust in the Seminole District.

Courtney Hurd led all scorers with 18 points for Staunton River (12-8). Pam Brown paced Buckingham (0-19) with 10 points.

Rural Retreat 79

Holston 63

RURAL RETREAT - The Indians swarmed the Cavaliers with full-court pressure from the start and came away with 20 steals in a Hogoheegee District victory.

After bolting to a 22-9 first-quarter lead, Rural Retreat (13-5, 9-5) called off its 1-2-2 diamond press because of foul trouble and Holston cut its deficit to nine at the half.

Angie Rosenbaum scored 18 points and Tanya Tarter had 17 for the Indians. Beth Ketner came up with 10 steals.

Connie Surber led Holston with 25 points.

Northwood 52

WYTHEVILLE - Jess Prater tossed in 20 points and the Panthers bolted to an early lead en route to a Hogoheegee District victory over the Maroons.

Northwood led 14-4 after the first quarter.

George Wythe (9-8, 7-6) got 13 points and eight rebounds from Lisa Garland.

Martinsville 58

Bassett 55

BASSETT- The Bulldogs capitalized on two of three Bengals turnovers in the final three seconds of overtime to pull out a Piedmont District victory.

Bassett led 42-39 heading into the fourth quarter, but Martinsville caught up and tied it at the buzzer. Tonya Martin grabbed an offensive rebound and her put-back fell through the net, forcing the extra period.

Kim Hairston, Timesland's leading scorer, led the Bengals with 26 points. Lynetta Johnson pitched in with 11 points for Bassett (16-2, 14-2).

Sam Ferguson led the Bulldogs with 16 points. She was one of four Martinsville (16-2, 14-2) players to score in double digits.
