KNIGHTS NOTCH 3RD VICTORY THIS WEEK

James River capped its most successful week of the season by beating Highland 38-34 in a Pioneer District girls' basketball game Thursday night.

The Knights held off the Rams to win for the third time this week. James River (6-12, 4-6) beat Shawsville, Craig County and Highland by a total of seven points.

Highland (2-17, 0-8) stayed close to the Knights for most of the night, but its comeback chances were thwarted when leading scorer April Rexrode fouled out late in the fourth quarter.

Angie Johnson scored 15 points and Tiffany Cox had 10 for the Knights.

Rexrode scored 12 points and made three 3-pointers for Highland.

The Highlanders clinched a tie for the Pioneer District regular-season title with an easy victory over the Chargers.

Sisters Marilea and Erika Hale combined for 39 points as Glenvar (16-2, 10-0) took a two-game lead over Covington with two games to play.

Marilea Hale had eight of her 23 points in the first quarter as Glenvar bolted to a 25-2 lead. The Highlanders led 44-8 at halftime. Erika Hale added 16 points and Amanda Kennedy had 10.

Bath County (3-15, 1-10) got a team-high eight points from Melanie Woods.

Cathy Smith had 16 points, 10 rebounds and five steals as the Terriers outhustled the Mountaineers for a Blue Ridge District victory.

Smith combined with Valerie Glynn for 15 points in the first quarter when Byrd (12-5, 6-2) jumped out to a 23-17 lead. Glynn finished with 13 points, three assists and three steals. Brandy Allen and Nicki Sarver added 10 points each.

Alleghany (3-5 district) was paced by Tasha Chapman with 17 points.

William Byrd had 22 steals and 17 assists.

Salem bolted out of the gates to a 34-11 halftime lead and Rockbridge never recovered as the Spartans rolled over the Wildcats.

Sarah Palmer led Salem (13-5, 7-1) with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. Tina Slate pitched in 11 point and Shellie Johnson added 10 to help pace the Spartans.

Natalie Wallace led Rockbridge (0-17, 0-9) with eight points.

RADFORD - The Buffaloes used a variety of presses to force numerous turnovers and create easy baskets as they took a 26-2 first-quarter lead and cruised to a Three Rivers District victory.

Floyd County (18-0, 6-0), Timesland's top-ranked team, was led by Sara Conner, who scored 11 points. The Buffaloes did not have another scorer in double figures, although every player contributed points.

Floyd County also shot well for the game, making 33 of 58 field-goal attempts.

Radford (7-12, 0-7) was led by Crystal Hubbard's 12 points.
