WIN NOT ENOUGH FOR COVINGTON

Joann Helton put on a one-woman show Thursday night as Covington turned on the afterburners in the second half to defeat Parry McCluer 54-48 in the Pioneer District.

Helton scored 32 points to lead the Cougars (14-4 overall, 8-2 in the district), who saw their hopes for a Pioneer regular-season title virtually disappear with Glenvar's 78-28 victory over Bath County. Covington trails the Highlanders by two games with two to play in the district.

Parry McCluer (13-4, 7-4) fought foul trouble all night, with four players fouling out in the last 90 seconds as the Fighting Blues lost a three-point lead.

Lindsey Coleman and Misty Snider each scored 12 points and Crystal Humphries added 10 for Parry McCluer.

Glenvar 78

Bath County 28

The Highlanders clinched at least a tie for the Pioneer District regular-season title with an easy victory over the Chargers.

Sisters Marilea and Erika Hale combined for 39 points as Glenvar (16-2, 10-0) took a two-game lead over Covington - which beat Parry McCluer 54-48 on Thursday night - with two games to play.

Marilea Hale scored eight of her 23 points in the first quarter as the Highlanders bolted to a 25-2 lead. Glenvar led 44-8 at halftime. Erika Hale added 16 points and Amanda Kennedy had 10.

Bath County (3-15, 1-10) got a team-high eight points from Melanie Woods.

Rural Retreat 79

Holston 63

RURAL RETREAT - The Indians swarmed the Cavaliers with full-court pressure from the start and came away with 20 steals in a Hogoheegee District victory.

After bolting to a 22-9 first-quarter lead, Rural Retreat (13-5, 9-5) called off its 1-2-2 diamond press because of foul trouble and Holston cut its deficit to nine at the half.

Angie Rosenbaum scored 18 points and Tanya Tarter had 17 for the Indians. Beth Ketner came up with 10 steals.

Connie Surber led Holston with 25 points.

Fieldale-Collinsville 72

Dan River 38

COLLINSVILLE - Cicely Becker scored 11 of her game-high 25 in the third quarter to help the Cavaliers pound the Wildcats in a Piedmont District game.

Fieldale-Collinsville (12-6, 11-5) outscored Dan River 17-2 in the first quarter and 26-9 in the third quarter to pave the way for the victory.

Yvonne Hall added 12 points and Carrie Quinlan had 11 for the Cavaliers.

Dan River (1-15, 1-15) got 10 points each from LaShawn Hairston and Terri Gunter.

William Byrd 60

Alleghany 42

Cathy Smith had 16 points, 10 rebounds and five steals as the Terriers outhustled the Mountaineers for a Blue Ridge District victory.

Smith combined with Valerie Glynn for 15 points in the first quarter, when Byrd (12-5, 6-2) took a 23-17 lead. Glynn finished with 13 points, three assists and three steals. Brandy Allen and Nicki Sarver added 10 points each.

Alleghany (3-5 district) was paced by Tasha Chapman with 17 points.

William Byrd had 22 steals and 17 assists.

Salem 65

Rockbridge County 21

The Spartans bolted out of the gates to a 34-11 halftime lead and the Wildcats never could recover in the Blue Ridge District matchup.

Sarah Palmer led Salem (13-5, 7-1) with 18 points, including four buckets from 3-point range. Tina Slate scored 11 and Shellie Johnson added 10 for the Spartans.

Natalie Wallace led Rockbridge (0-17, 0-9) with eight points.

James River 38

Highland 34

BUCHANAN - The Knights won their third close contest this week, holding off the Rams in a Pioneer District game.

Highland (2-17, 0-8) stayed close to James River (6-12, 4-6) for most of the night, but its comeback chances were thwarted when leading scorer April Rexrode fouled out late in the fourth quarter.

Angie Johnson scored 15 points and Tiffany Cox had 10 for the Knights, who beat Shawsville on a last-second shot Monday and edged Craig County on Tuesday.

Rexrode scored 12 points and made three 3-pointers for Highland.

Northwood 52

George Wythe 35

WYTHEVILLE - Jess Prater tossed in 20 points and the Panthers bolted to an early lead en route to a Hogoheegee District victory over the Maroons.

Northwood led 14-4 after the first quarter.

George Wythe (9-8, 7-6) got 13 points and eight rebounds from Lisa Garland.

Narrows 65

Rocky Gap 46

ROCKY GAP - Suzanne Webb scored 18 points and Melissa Lawrence added 16 to lead the Green Wave past the Eagles in a Mountain Empire District game.

Narrows used a decisive 10-0 run in the third quarter to take control of the game. Lawrence scored eight of her 16 points in the third as the Green Wave outscored Rocky Gap 18-7 in the quarter.

Narrows got 15 points from Melissa ``Bud'' Lucas.

The Eagles (6-12, 4-4) were led by Amanda Clark, who scored 15 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had four steals. Michelle Sarver added 13 points for Rocky Gap.

Fort Chiswell 66

Grayson County 39

MAX MEADOWS - Jenny Porter scored 15 points and Jennifer Sparks added 13 to lead the Pioneers to a Mountain Empire District victory over the Blue Devils.

Fort Chiswell (5-13, 4-4) led 33-11 at the half and cruised to its second victory of the week.

Lindsey Carico led Grayson County with 10 points.

Galax 60

Bland 23

BLAND - The Maroon Tide took a 22-7 first-quarter lead and never looked back as it toppled the Rockets in a Mountain Empire District game.

Tammy Cox, the district's leading scorer, had 12 of her 14 points in the third period for Galax (14-3, 6-1).

Shannon Enoch and Rae Romano led Bland (0-16, 0-8) with six points each.
