COLEMAN: "I served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1966 to 1969, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. This period of national service taught me discipline and gave to me a sense of sacrifice and pride which continues to sustain me still today. I believe service to our country, whether in the military or in some other form, is an important part of American citizenship. It builds character and enables a person to maintain a balance no matter whether they are enjoying success or dealing with adversity. These are important lessons for citizens, but especially for those who aspire to high public office like the U.S. Senate."
NORTH: "Military experience is one of those factors in life which helps to mold your character and shape your views. I certainly feel it will be helpful to me in providing a broader understanding of defense and foreign policy. "
ROBB: "I am proud of my 34 years in the United States Marine Corps. After graduating from the Basic School at Quantico, I was privileged to serve 13 months in Vietnam, much of that time as a Rifle Company Commander. Though I have tried to avoid politicizing my military record, the experience of uniformed service to my country has helped to form what I characterize as my core values and beliefs.
"As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, my military experience has been invaluable. My own service allows me to better understand the impact our decisions have on all aspects of military readiness."
