MARTINSVILLE ENDS BASSETT WIN STREAK

BASSETT - Martinsville capitalized on two of three Bassett turnovers in the final three seconds of overtime to pull out a 58-55 Piedmont District victory over the Bengals Thursday night.

The Bulldogs gained revenge for an earlier loss and ended a 10-game victory streak by the Bengals.

Bassett led the game 42-39 heading into the fourth quarter, but Martinsville caught up and tied it at the buzzer.

Tonya Martin grabbed an offensive rebound and her put-back attempt fell through the net, sending the game into overtime.

Kim Hairston, Timesland's leading scorer, paced the Bengals with 26 points. Lynetta Johnson pitched in an additional 11 points for Bassett (16-2 overall, 14-2 district).

Sam Ferguson led the Bulldogs with 16 points. She was one of four Martinsville (16-2, 14-2) players to score in double digits. Erica Brandon scored 14, Trecita Holland added 13, and Martin tossed in 12.

Bassett's win pulled them into a first place tie with Martinsville with only two games remaining for each team.

Patrick County 63

Magna Vista 50

STUART - Amy Nelson scored 13 points and Christy Carlson added 10 points to lead a balanced Patrick County attack as the Cougars outlasted the Warriors in a Piedmont District game.

The Cougars took control in the fourth after Magna Vista's Tanesia Kellam fouled out. Patrick County outscored Magna Vista 21-12 in the quarter and went on for the win.

Kellam, who scored 14 points in the third quarter to keep Magna Vista in the game, finished with 16 points.

Tonia Zehr and Felicia Craig added 12 and 11 points, respectively for the Warriors (12-7, 9-7).

DRY FORK - Tanya Martin scored 15 points and Brandy Martin added 13 to spark Laurel Park (5-13, 5-11) to a Piedmont District victory.
