SALEM BLITZES ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY 30-15

Rockbridge County football coach Jamie Talbott saw the best and the worst of Salem's passing attack.

After his Wildcats halted Salem offensively before intermission, they ran into a second-half blitz as the Spartans came up with three third-quarter touchdown passes on the way to a 30-15 Blue Ridge District victory Friday.

The Wildcats' defense, which was valiant in the opening 24 minutes might have been tired.

``Maybe, but I just think Salem executed its passing offense so well,'' Talbott said.

The Wildcats were tied at the half thanks to Gary Tyree's 91-yard kickoff return that followed a 2-yard touchdown pass by Salem's Seth Moore to Aaron Coffey.

``He just saw a seam and ran it right up the middle,'' Talbott said.

That was Rockbridge's only offense. The Wildcats (3-5 overall, 2-2 in the Blue Ridge District) squandered another chance after recovering a fumble on the Spartan 32.

In the third quarter, Moore and Coffey teamed up for two touchdown passes of 47 and 15 yards as Salem (4-4, 4-0) took control of the game to remain in a deadlock for the Blue Ridge District lead with Northside.

After a safety, Moore hit Matt Hyatt with a 25-yard scoring pass, giving him four touchdown tosses.
