TRIGON ABOUT TO MAIL 1ST REFUND CHECKS

Trigon Blue Cross Blue Shield said it has received 27,600 claims for refunds under a 5-week-old program in which it was ordered by the state to reimburse customers for excess co-payments they made. The company expects to begin mailing the first refund checks Monday. The filing deadline is Dec. 7.

At issue was a practice of calculating policyholders' shares of their medical bills - their co-payments or co-insurance - without taking into account discounts Trigon had negotiated with hospitals and other medical facilities. Trigon dropped the practice Jan. 1.
