ROANOKE STUNS WESLEYAN 1-0

The Roanoke College men's soccer team upset No. 2-ranked Virginia Wesleyan Friday 1-0 in the semifinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament.

Senior striker Andy Smith scored the lone goal for the Maroons (10-8 overall, 7-4 ODAC) in the 79th minute on an assist from Keith Arnott. It was the first loss of the season for the Marlins (17-1-1, 10-1).

Roanoke will play Hampden-Sydney, a 3-2 overtime winner over Randolph-Macon, in the final today at 2 p.m. at Norfolk.

In Ashland, Jen Kohler scored two goals as Randolph-Macon shut out Roanoke College 4-0 in a semifinal of the ODAC women's soccer tournament. Randolph-Macon is 12-0-4; the Maroons finish 10-5-2. The Yellow Jackets will meet Virginia Wesleyan, 1-0 winners over Washington and Lee, in the final today.

In Harrisonburg, Kelly Jo Kern and Candy Sauder scored two goals each as Eastern Mennonite (16-1-1) routed Roanoke College (8-6) 7-0 in an ODAC field hockey tournament semifinal. The Royals will face Lynchburg, a 2-1 winner over Bridgewater, in the final today.

In Blacksburg, Virginia Tech snapped a six-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over Appalachian State in men's soccer. Rodney Walsh scored with 10 minutes left to play to put Virginia Tech (5-10) ahead for good. Appalachian State (5-11) tied the game on Jay Lane's goal at 56:56.

At Edmond, Okla., Washington and Lee senior All-American Marilyn Baker defeated Jamie Levine of Skidmore 6-3, 6-0 to earn third place at the Rolex National Small College Tennis Championships for the second straight year.

The Roanoke men's and women's cross country teams earned victories over host Bridgewater in an ODAC dual meet.

The Maroons took the top five places in the women's 5,000-meter competition en route to a perfect 15-48 victory. Lynn Schwehr of Salem was first with a time of 21 minutes, 3 seconds. In the men's competion, J.J. Mayberry won his sixth race of the year as the Maroons prevailed 23-35.

At Baltimore, Kelly Reischer's goal just seven minutes into the game gave Radford a 1-0 victory over UNC Asheville in a Big South Conference Women's Soccer Tournament quarterfinal match.

At Philadelphia, Virginia Tech's Katherine Chen, Kathy Dixon and the doubles team of Jen Dinello and Dixon all were winners in the first round of the ITA Regional Championships in women's tennis.

At Columbia, S.C., freshman Mark Tepes was the lone Virginia Tech winner (6-2, 6-1 over Virginia's Aaron Strimban) in the opening round of the University of South Carolina 1994 Region II Fall Invitational.
