TECH MEN RUN AWAY WITH TITLE

The Virginia Tech men's cross country team won its first Metro Conference championship since 1989 and its first under coach Steve Taylor as the Hokies finished with 31 points - eight points ahead of three-time defending champion South Florida - on Saturday in New Orleans.

Tech's top finisher was former Cave Spring High School runner, John Hawthorne, who placed third with a time of 24 minutes, 32 seconds behind two South Florida runners. Hawthorne was followed by teammates Tom Lankowicz and Matt Zacharias, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively, and Marshall Ferguson, who placed eighth. All four Hokies runners earned All-Metro honors with their top 10 finishes.

Tech's scoring was rounded out by Mike Cox, whose 11th-place finish just ahead of South Florida's fourth and fifth runners helped seal the championship.

The title marks the tenth time since 1980 that Tech has won the Metro title.

Tech's women's cross country team finished fourth in the Metro Conference Championship with 95 points - 58 behind co-champions South Florida and UNC Charlotte.
