The move, announced to employees Monday, was made "strictly for business reasons," said Steve Boynton, manager of materials for the company's Paper and Forest Products division based at West Point
He said the company decided it could better use its resources elsewhere.
The closing will affect two employees who work at the Hollins Road plant, operating a single baler. The company's other subsidiary in Roanoke, Chesapeake Packaging Co.'s Roanoke Division, is not affected by the closing.
Madge Bush, spokeswoman for the operation's parent, Chesapeake Corp. in Richmond, said the recycling center packaged used corrugated cardboard and shipped it to West Point for processing. The corrugated cardboard came from the packaging division and from the general public.
Bush said the center also accepted waste fiber from the general public and from independent contractors, selling it on the recycling market.
