Virginia Power gets fuel-factor increase

The Virginia State Corporation Commission has approved an increase of $9.9 million in the amount Virginia Power Co. can pass on to its customers for annual fuel expenses.

The average winter bill for a Virginia Power customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity will increase 20 cents a month, from $84.77 to $84.97.

The increase is $15 million less than the company had asked for. In Western Virginia, the Richmond-based utility sells electricity in portions of Alleghany, Bath, Bedford, Botetourt and Rockbridge counties.

Grant to help state expand its exports

Virginia Tech and Southwest Virginia economic development organizations will help the state Department of Economic Development use a $144,440 federal grant to expand Virginia's exports in Eastern Europe.

The grant comes through a U.S. Department of Commerce market development program, which seeks to increase U.S. exports by encouraging innovation in private-sector marketing and strategic planning.

The program will target export partners in Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary and emphasize exports from coal-rich Southwest Virginia. Exports to the targeted countries in 1993 were $35.3 million.
