BOUCHER OUTSPENDING FAST BY A WIDE MARGIN

Rep. Rick Boucher outspent his 9th District opponent, Steve Fast, by a nearly 5-to-1 ratio during the first three weeks of October, according to new campaign finance reports.

The Abingdon Democrat spent $238,100 between Oct. 1 and 22 as he hit the airwaves with television advertising and mailboxes with direct mail appeals targeted to specific communities. That's nearly half of the $490,000 he's spent in the campaign.

Fast, the Republican challenger from Tazewell, spent nearly $50,000 in the same period. He has spent $149,300 in the race so far. Fast is on leave from his job as assistant professor of mathematics at Bluefield College.

The final Federal Election Commission report before next week's election shows Boucher with $418,800 left to spend, compared with $25,500 for Fast.

Overall, Boucher has raised $430,500 this year, compared with $183,900 for Fast. Still, Fast has nearly doubled the amount of money raised by Boucher's 1992 opponent, former Radford City Council member Gary Weddle.

Boucher had $480,400 in his campaign treasury when the year began. For the first three weeks of October, Boucher raised $98,100, compared with $31,200 for Fast.
