The accident occurred in the southbound lane of 220, just south of Dudley's Truck Stop Restaurant, about 10 p.m.
A customer at the truck stop, who asked that her name not be used, said she saw six or seven cars involved in the accident. She said a thick fog had settled and the road was slick from rain.
A nursing supervisor for Franklin Memorial Hospital said four people had been brought in for treatment as of 11 p.m., but she was expecting others. She could not confirm whether there were any deaths.
Because of the fog, she said, Lifeguard 10 could not be used to transport victims to the hospital.
