Tree-loss loans
ABINGDON - Christmas tree growers in many Virginia counties are eligible for emergency loans through the Farmers Home Administration to offset losses resulting from a late freeze in May.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens and established farm operators in business at the time of the disaster.

`Heads vs. Feds'
BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech Union will sponsor "The Heads Vs. the Feds: The Debate to Legalize Marijuana" Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Colonial Hall, Squires Student Center, Virginia Tech.
Richard Cowan, executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws and Peter Bensinger, former director of the Drug Enforcement Agency will debate marijuana legalization at the free event.
Coat collection
BLACKSBURG - The Greater Blacksburg Chamber of Commerce is collecting unwanted coats for its second annual Give a Coat for Christmas Campaign.
A Cleaner World Drycleaners will clean and repair the coats and give them to the Montgomery County Christmas store to distribute.
Coats should be delivered to A Cleaner World at South Main and King streets by Nov. 12.

Fuel assistance
BLACKSBURG - The Montgomery County Department of Social Services is accepting applications for fuel and crisis assistance. The assistance will be offered until funds are no longer available.
Applicants must live in Montgomery County and meet eligibility guidelines.
Applications will be accepted until Nov. 14.
