ANOTHER FIRST UNION EXECUTIVE TO RETIRE

Byron Yost, executive vice president and commercial-loan portfolio manager at First Union National Bank of Virginia in Roanoke, said Tuesday he will retire Dec. 1.

Yost, 55, will complete a 32-year banking career that he began in 1962 as a management trainee at First National Exchange Bank of Virginia, which later became Dominion Bankshares Corp.

"I've had a long and great career, but now I'm ready for a change in my life," Yost said. "I don't have any firm plans at the present time, other than to enjoy life and explore a variety of options that I've never had time to pursue before."

The Salem native held positions at First National, Dominion and later First Union after First Union acquired Dominion in March 1993.

He worked in the bank's commercial and consumer lending at Roanoke for 26 years; was chairman, president and chief executive officer of Dominion Bank of Richmond from 1988 to 1991; corporate executive officer for Dominion's eastern district from 1991 to 1993; and Roanoke-area president for First Union from 1993 to 1994 prior to assuming his current position this year.

Yost, an avid runner, also coordinated the Dominion-sponsored - and now First Union-sponsored - "Festival Classic" road race in Roanoke, held in June since 1985.

Dick Carling, vice chairman of credit administration for First Union's Virginia operations, called Yost "an outstanding leader whose talents and friendship will be deeply missed by his colleagues."
