TECH NAMES NEW COACH FOR LACROSSE

Dipi Bhaya, who guided Drexel to a Top 20 ranking last season, has been named coach of the fledgling women's lacrosse program at Virginia Tech.

Bhaya, 30, will assume her duties Dec.1 and put together a team to begin play in the spring. Her 1993 Drexel team went 12-3, setting a school record for victories and reaching No.15 in the coaches' poll. She was named the East Coast Conference's coach of the year in 1991 and also has served as a regional coach in the Philadelphia area for the National Women's Lacrosse Tournament.

Blum scored on a pass from Rich Daughtridge 14 minutes, 28 seconds into the first half to put VMI (5-9-1) ahead 2-0. The goal was his eighth of the season and the 27th of his career, tying the career record set by Spruill Thompson from 1980-83.

Blum will have a chance to break the record when the Keydets open play in the Southern Conference tournament Friday against Georgia Southern.

At Chatham, John Childress of Roanoke Valley Christian won the individual competition at the Virginia Independent Conference boys' cross country meet and helped the Eagles to the team title.
