PRISON COMPANY LOOKING IN VA.

Twenty localities in Southwest Virginia are being scrutinized by a private prison company as a possible site for a facility to house about 1,000 inmates.

The cities of Radford, Galax and Norton and the counties of Roanoke, Pulaski, Floyd, Wythe, Carroll, Grayson, Smyth, Bland, Tazewell, Buchanan, Lee, Dickenson, Craig, Scott, Russell and Wise, and the town of Big Stone Gap in Wise County are the candidates.

Representatives of Corrections Corporation of America, based in Nashville, Tenn., will be visiting them in the coming weeks to see if they are receptive to a prison as an economic development. They will also look into zoning, taxes and the availability of utilities.

About 100 acres would be required.
