GLENVAR WRAPS UP PIONEER DISTRICT TITLE

Glenvar wrapped up the Pioneer District girls' basketball championship with a 75-24 thrashing of Highland on Tuesday night.

The Highlanders led 18-3 at the end of one quarter and 34-7 at halftime.

Four players scored in double figures for Glenvar (17-2, 11-0), led by Marilea Hale's 22 points. Toree Morris scored 12, and Amanda Bishop and Erika Hale each added 10.

Highland (2-17, 0-11) was limited to single-digit scoring in all four quarters.

Bath County 39

James River 38

HOT SPRINGS - Melanie Woods sank two free throws with eight seconds remaining to lift the Chargers over the Knights in a Pioneer District game.

Katie Hardbarger scored a career-high 19 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, had four steals and two blocks for Bath County. Tiffany Cox had 15 points for James River.

COVINGTON - The Cougars had five scorers in double figures as they cruised past the Rockets in the Pioneer District.

JoAnna Helton (13 points), Charlee Laws (11), Bessie Laws (11), Michele Jeter (10) and Nancy Shawver (10) did most of the damage for Covington (15-4, 10-2). The Cougars pulled away by outscoring Craig County 26-10 in the final quarter.

Chrissy Robertson scored 19 of the Rockets' 33 points.

Lord Botetourt 58

Alleghany 28

LOW MOOR - The Cavaliers stayed alive in the Blue Ridge District race with a victory over the Mountaineers.

Lord Botetourt wasted no time in pressing Alleghany early and building a 13-point halftime lead.

Sarah Hicks scored 10 of her game-high 16 points in the first quarter, as Lord Botetourt (14-5, 7-2) took a 16-7 first-quarter lead. The Cavaliers steadily increased the lead the rest of the game.

Alleghany (8-11, 3-9), victimized by turnovers and missed layups early, was led by Tasha Chapman's 12 points.

Northside 64

Rockbridge County 40

The Vikings attained their highest scoring total of the season in a Blue Ridge District victory over the Wildcats.

Every player scored for Northside (6-11, 3-6), led by Terri Craig's 19 points. Amy Heath had 13.

Tonia Clements finished with 18 for Rockbridge (0-18, 0-9), including 10 in the fourth quarter.

MONETA - Hope Cook scored 16 of her game-high 22 in the second half to help the Generals hold off the Golden Eagles in a Seminole District game. Courtney Hurd tried to rally Staunton River (11-8, 11-8), scoring eight of her team-high 14 in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough.

BEDFORD - Sophomore Sue Cowlbeck scored 16 points and grabbed 20 rebounds to lead the Minettes past the Devils in a Seminole District game. Cowlbeck, Timesland's leading rebounder, scored eight of her points in the first quarter to spark Liberty (15-4, 15-4).
