FORT CHISWELL UPENDS MAROON TIDE 45-42

GALAX - Amy Lyons rebounded a missed shot, made the basket and was fouled with seven seconds left to give Fort Chiswell a 45-43 upset victory over Galax in a Mountain Empire District game, preventing the Maroon Tide from clinching at least a tie for the district title.

Galax remained tied with Narrows, a 44-18 winner over Bland, for the regular-season championship heading into Thursday's final games.

Lyons rebounded a missed shot by Jenny Porter and then made the free throw after being fouled. Galax (14-5 overall, 7-2 in the district) had taken a 43-42 lead after Jaclyn Dickens, who led the Maroon Tide with 14 points, made a 3-pointer.

Fort Chiswell (5-13, 5-4) was led by Trish Stuart, who scored a game-high 16 points. Lyons added 10.

Narrows 44

Bland 18

NARROWS - Meredith Lucas, the Green Wave's only senior, celebrated Senior Night in grand style as Narrows rolled past the Rockets in a Mountain Empire District game. Lucas scored a game-high 12 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and had six steals. Suzanne Webb chipped in 11 points, and Melissa Lawrence added eight points and 13 assists for the Green Wave, which remained tied with Galax in the regular-season race.

Giles 36

FLOYD - Laura Harman and Melisssa Cantrell scored 12 points each as the Buffaloes routed the Spartans in a Three Rivers District game and clinched the regular-season title. Harman had eight of her points in the first quarter as Floyd County (20-0, 7-0) took a 26-5 lead. Giles (12-7, 5-3) got 13 points from Tomika Saunders.

Auburn 37

SHAWSVILLE - Beth Burdette scored off an offensive rebound, was fouled and made a free throw with six seconds left to lift the Shawnees over the Eagles in a Three Rivers District game. Burdette, a freshman, scored all six of her points in the fourth quarter. She also had 16 rebounds.

Monday's game

Carroll County 55, Auburn 34: In Riner, the Cavaliers used a 19-7 advantage in the second quarter to pull away to a non-district victory over the Eagles. Jennifer Watkins and Deneane Jessup each had 11 points for Carroll County (14-6). Auburn (10-8) was led by Lori Lyons with a game-high 13.
