2 CAVS ALL-ACC IN WOMEN'S SOCCER

Virginia forward Kim Smith and defender Danielle Desfosses have been named to the first team All-ACC women's soccer team in a vote by the conference's coaches.

Smith has led the Cavaliers this season with 10 goals and eight assists. Desfosses has four goals and an assist while leading a defense that is averaging 0.68 goals against per game.

Virginia (13-4-2) opens play in the ACC tournament today against Maryland in Chapel Hill, N.C.

James Madison junior Ashley Williamson tied the school record with four goals in a 7-0 victory over Virginia Tech in women's soccer. The Hokies (8-10) were outshot 29-4 by the Dukes (10-6-1).

The Radford women's soccer team, picked to finish seventh in the Big South's preseason poll, finished tied for second and will enter the conference tournament as the third seed today.

The Highlanders (11-5-2 overall, 6-2 Big South), under first-year coach Spencer Smith, will face sixth-seeded Liberty at 5 p.m. on the campus of UNC Greensboro.

Ferrum defeated Guilford 15-11, 15-12, 15-12 for its first Dixie Conference volleyball victory over the Quakers since the Panthers joined Division III in 1986.

Ferrum (20-12, 8-4) finished third in the conference and will play sixth-seeded Christopher Newport in the first round of the conference tournament Friday at 6 p.m. in Norfolk. Don't know if we use this but if you can: Ferrum's Kia William was named Dixie Conference player of the week. She had 29 kills and a .561 attack average last week.

The championship round of the Sandlot Super Bowl will be played Saturday and Sunday at Salem Stadium. One ticket, priced at $2, is good for all games.

Action begins at 10 a.m. Saturday with the Division I Pee Wee game, followed by the Division II and Division III Pee Wee matchups. The Little League action begins with the Division I game at 2:30 p.m., followed by the Division II and Division III contests. The Junior League action starts with the Division I contest at 1 p.m. Sunday, followed by the Division II and Division games.

Bill Moore, a sports psychologist from East Carolina University, will be the guest speaker for the Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame's annual banquet Nov.9 at Hidden Valley Country Club.

The banquet, which begins at 6:45 p.m., will honor the 1994 Hall of Fame Metro golf team. Tickets for the banquet are $13 and the deadline is today. Seats can be reserved by calling Joe Thomas Jr. at 389-8193.
