HACKLER HELPS GRAYSON TURN BACK EAGLES 57-54

Tammy Hackler scored nine of her 12 points in the decisive second quarter Tuesday night to lead Grayson County to a 57-54 victory over Rocky Gap in high school girls' basketball in Independence.

Grayson County used a season-high 22 points in the period to take a 33-23 lead, then held on by hitting eight of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter to win the Mountain Empire District contest.

Lindsay Carico scored 13 points and Emily Halsey added 11 for Grayson County (5-12 overall, 4-5 MED). Amanda Clark led Rocky Gap with 16 points and Nancy Tupper and Tara Easter scored 12 each.

Tuesday's games

Narrows 44, Bland 18: In Narrows, Meredith Lucas, the Green Wave's only senior, celebrated Senior Night in grand style as Narrows rolled past the Rockets in the Mountain Empire District.

Lucas scored a game-high 12 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and had six steals for the Green Wave, which led 18-0 after one quarter

Suzanne Webb chipped in 11 points and Melissa Lawrence added eight points and 13 assists for Narrows.

Chilhowie 58, George Wythe 35: In Chilhowie, Emily Dungan scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Warriors past the Maroons in a Hogoheegee District game.

Chilhowie (14-5, 12-3) outscored George Wythe 27-15 in the first half and never looked back.

The Maroons (10-9, 8-7) did not have a double-figure scorer.

Northwood 64, Rural Retreat 53: In Saltville, Jess Prater scored a game-high 28 points to lead the Panthers past the Indians in a Hogoheegee District game.

Northwood (14-5, 12-3) trailed by 10 after the first quarter, but came back to win. Serina Jones chipped in 16 points, and Crystal Kestner added eight points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out eight assists for the Panthers.

Rural Retreat (13-6, 9-6) was led by Krystal Dale, who scored 13 points.

Covington 64, Craig County 33: In Covington, the Cougars had five players score in double figures as they cruised past the Rockets in the Pioneer District.

JoAnna Helton (13 points), Charlee Laws (11), Bessie Laws (11), Michele Jeter (10) and Nancy Shawver (10) did most of the damage for Covington (15-4, 10-2). The Cougars pulled away by outscoring Craig County 26-10 in the final quarter.

Chrissy Robertson scored 19 of the Rockets' 33 points.

Magna Vista 55, Chatham 54: In Ridgeway, Tonia Zehr hit the second of two free throws with six seconds left, giving the Warriors a Piedmont District victory.

Tanesia Kellam, who didn't score in the first quarter, led Magna Vista (13-7, 10-7) with 17 points. She scored seven points in the final quarter.

Chatham was paced by Jion Ward and Natasha Hairston with 14 each.
