Only 255 of Tech's more than 24,000 students turned out for the election, possibly because of cold and windy weather, or possibly because there wasn't much pre-election publicity, said Betty Hayden, editor-in-chief of the Collegiate Times, Tech's student paper. The paper and Circle K Club sponsored the event.
"We would've liked to see a bigger turnout, but I think if more people voted, the results would still be similar," Hayden said Wednesday. "The mood on campus is very pro-North." North received 171 votes, or 67.1 percent of the vote. Democratic Sen. Charles Robb received 58 votes, or 22.7 percent, and independent Marshall Coleman received 26 votes, or 10.2 percent.
