No charges have been filed, but detectives with the Police Department's Youth Bureau have been assigned to investigate the case.
Police would not identify the mother or the child, and said only that the incident happened at a home in Northwest Roanoke.
According to a police news release Wednesday, the mother told authorities she was bathing the child when he slipped out of her hands and into the water, and that she was unable to get him out immediately .
Police and rescue units responded to the home about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, after the woman called 911.
She told police she was bathing the child in a small bathtub that had been placed inside a regular one. No one else was home at the time.
It was not clear Wednesday how long the child was submerged. After getting him out of the tub, the woman took the child into a bedroom and tried to revive him for more than 15 minutes before calling for help, she told police.
An autopsy conducted Wednesday determined that the child had drowned.
Police said their investigation could last several days.
