NERVO RUNS TO REGION C GIRLS' TITLE

For the second consecutive year, Glenvar's Trish Nervo set a course record Wednesday en route to the individual title at the Region C girls' cross country meet.

Nervo, the defending Group A champion, ran the 3.25-mile course at Camp Alta Mons in Alleghany Springs in 19 minutes, 15 seconds, which was 20 seconds faster than her previous mark and 1:30 ahead of second-place finisher Kelly Rector of Patrick Henry-Glade Spring.

PH-Glade Spring won the girls' team title with 34 points. John Battle was second at 92, followed by Giles (93) and Radford (106).

Jason Morisco of Floyd County won the boys' individual competition in 16:57, and Ben Cook was third to help the Buffaloes finish second.

Lebanon won the team title with 48 points, 10 better than Floyd County. PH-Glade Spring was third (66) and Galax took fourth (100).

The top four teams and 15 individuals advance to the state competition Nov.12 at the Great Meadow course in Warrenton.

In other high school sports:

Joanne Fisher of Salem captured the girls' individual championship at the Region III cross country meet in Naruna, running the 3.1-mile course in 20:55.

Heavily favored Carrie Singleton of host William Campbell was forced out of the meet when an injury to a hip muscle, suffered during the Seminole District meet, flared. Singleton, who finished sixth in the state last year, will apply for a medical waiver for this year's competition.

Brookville won the team portion of the girls' meet with 41 points. Jefferson Forest was second (62 points), followed by William Byrd (91) and Gretna (131).

Jefferson Forest used four top 15 finishes to run away with the boys' team title. The Cavaliers totaled 45 points, 61 points ahead of second-place Alleghany. William Byrd (112 points) was third, followed by Lord Botetourt (115).

David Vicks of Brookville was the boys' individual champion, with a time of 17:07.

The top four teams and top 15 individuals advance to the Group AA meet Nov.12 in Warrenton.

Franklin County remained undefeated and advanced to the championship round of the Roanoke Valley District volleyball tournament by defeating William Fleming 15-5, 15-13 in Rocky Mount.

The Eagles (20-0) will take on Patrick Henry, a 15-9, 15-2 winner over Cave Spring on Wednesday, for the championship at 7 p.m. today.
