Twain lectures continue

The Mark Twain Lecture Series, presented by Henry Sweets, continues tonight and Friday in the Roanoke Valley. Sweets has been the director of the Mark Twain Home and Museum in Hannibal, Mo., since 1978. A Hannibal native, Sweets holds a master's degree in education from the University of Illinois and a master's in history from the University of Delaware.

The lecture, ``Little Known Facets of Twain's Life,'' covers the writer's personal relationships with well-known personalities of his day, including Gen. U.S. Grant, Helen Keller and others. The talk also covers Twain's inventions and business career.

The lecture, free and open to the public, will be held at Roanoke College tonight from 7 to 8 p.m., and at Christ Lutheran Church from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The series is sponsored by World Class Inc., which will bring actor Hal Holbrook's one-man show, ``Mark Twain Tonight!'', to the Roanoke Civic Center on Nov. 9. Tickets for that show are $22 and $28, with proceeds benefitting the Make a Wish Foundation. Call the civic center box office, 981-1201, for tickets.

Hollins lectures

Hollins College's ``Two Decades: Voices of Women Empowered Series' '' next gathering will be Nov. 12. Presentations include ``Women in the Work Force: The Economic Impact'' by Kay Broschart, professor of sociology; ``Women and Reproduction: The Sociological Impact in a Changing World'' by James Holman, M.D.; ``Women in Politics: The Impact of Research Issues'' by Carol Pratt, politician; and ``Cancers in Women: When Can We Take Control?'' by Stephen Rosenoff, M.D., oncologist.

The lectures, which being at 9:30 a.m., are followed by a brunch at 11:30 a.m., workshops on presented topics at noon, and the closing session at 12:30 p.m. Registratrion begins at 9 p.m on the college's Ballator Galley, Moody Center. Pre-registration is $10. The series is sponsored by the Women's Center at Hollins and the Center for Women's Health Education at Community Hospital.
