SEAMAN RECRUIT DEANNA S. SMITH, daughter of Don B. and Pauletta A. Smith of Blue Ridge, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command in Orlando, Fla.

She is a 1993 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School.

SEAMAN RECRUIT SAMUEL D. SMITH, son of Samuel O. Smith and Diana F. Scharnus of Roanoke, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

He is a 1990 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

SEAMAN RECRUIT JEFFREY S. RUSSELL, son of Debra F. Wimmer of Roanoke, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 1993 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS LARRY M. POWELL, son of Larry M. and Shirley H. Powell of Vinton, recently was promoted to his present rank while serving at Naval Ophthalmic Support and Training Activity in Yorktown. He also re-enlisted for four years.

He is a 1989 graduate of William Byrd High School.

MARK WILHELM, son of Larry and Bonnie Bailey of Roanoke, has graduated from the Army Basic Training unit at Fort Jackson, S.C. He is stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He is a 1994 graduate of William Byrd High School.
