Roanokers' work in juried annual review

A color poster featuring the work of three Roanokers is included in the juried annual review edition of "Letter Arts Review."

Designer and calligrapher Dianne W. Smith used photography by Richard Boyd and text by Terry Smith to create a promotional item for Dominion Graphic Services in Roanoke. The ad was one of 56 chosen from 600 entries for publication in the journal.

Dianne Smith is a free-lance artist in calligraphy and graphic design. Her work appears in a variety of media throughout the Roanoke Valley.

Boyd owns Richard Boyd Photography and provides photography for advertising agencies and commercial clients in the Roanoke area.

Terry Smith is free-lance copy editor specializing in marketing and healthcare communications.

Roanokers published in book of poetry

Four Roanoke poets will have their work published in Vol. 10 of The Poet's Domain titled "Those Move Easiest Who Have Learned To Dance."

Laddie Fisher, Becky Mushko, Richard Raymond III and Peggy Waldron are four of 101 regional poets featured in ROAD Publishers' largest poetry book in the series. Vol. 10 should be in local bookstores soon.

Area poets are invited to submit poems for Vol. 11 by Dec. 16. Poets should request the publisher's "Submission Requirements and Guidelines" by mailing a stamped, self-addressed business envelope to ROAD Publishers, P. O. Box 431, Painter, VA, 23420.

Volunteers needed for LOA programs

The League Of Older Americans needs volunteers for its Senior Companion Program in the counties of Roanoke, Botetourt and Craig. Companions give four hours daily helping other seniors with every day activities.

Also, volunteers are needed to help plan "Lunch on the Lawn '95," LOA's annual benefit for Meals-on-Wheels. Volunteers are needed to sell tickets, make phone calls and deliveries. Call Kevin at 345-0451 for more information.

Craig boosters name raffle winners

The winner of the Craig Rocket Boosters Club raffle to benefit the Craig County High School athletic field was Linda "Chee Chee" Caldwell, who took the grand prize of a 1994 Ford 4x4 pickup truck.

Her ticket was selected in a random drawing during the Craig County Fall Festival.

The second-place prize of $1,000 was won by Harold Bayne of Salem. A third-place prize of $750 went to Wade Dudding of New Castle. Bob Kendall, also of New Castle, won the fourth-place prize of $500.

The raffle was held to raise funds to install lights at the high school athletic field.

Amber Nelson, raffle coordinator for the boosters, said the group hopes to make the raffle an annual event.

Volunteers assist flood relief in Texas

Four disaster relief workers from the Roanoke Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross were recently dispatched to Houston to assist with flood relief efforts there.

They are: Tom Brown, Roanoke Valley chapter manager, serving at Disaster Relief Headquarters in Houston; Jerry Stewart, coordinating the Red Cross fleet of more than 100 emergency response vehicles; Joe Stover, delivering food and supplies to flood victims; and Paul Moore, working at a Dayton, Texas Red Cross service center to meet with flood victims to evaluate their emergency needs.

The Red Cross estimates that more than 10,000 families in southeastern Texas have been affected by recent flooding.

Museum contest winners named

Lee Baker of Roanoke and Pam Ogden of Salem were recent winners in the Virginia Museum of Transportation's 1994 Kemper A. Dobbins Transportation Art Exposition

Baker received second in show for her painting "Memories of the Line." Ogden won third in show for her entry "City Regatta."
