Leaf collection schedule announced

The City of Roanoke has begun its annual bagged leaf collection.

The city asks that bagged leaves be brought to the street, not the alley, on the same day as normal trash pickup. Leaves should be placed separate from refuse containers. Bags containing trash will be marked and left for regular refuse trucks.

Leaves will be recycled into mulch, which will then be made available to residents free of charge. The mulch will be given out at the corner of Courtland Avenue and Carver Road.

Choir seeking male singers for holidays

The Virginia Gentlemen is seeking male singers for a holiday chorus. Four rehearsals will be held Tuesday nights at 7:30 p.m. beginning Nov. 15. at Salem Baptist Church.

The choir will give performances on Dec. 10 and 17.

Roanokers pass state bar exam

Several Roanoke-area residents recently passed Virginia Bar Examination.

Museum preparing historical narrative

Harrison Museum of African Culture and Dr. Walter Claytor are compiling data for a narrative on the African-American experience and history in the Roanoke Valley.

The museum is soliciting student's names, schools, years of graduation from African-Americans born in Roanoke, Roanoke County and Salem who completed post-secondary education. Photos and copies of degrees may be included.

Send the requested information for this narrative called, "Educational Roll of Honor" by Nov. 30 to: Harrison Museum of African American Culture, P. O. Box 194, Roanoke, VA 24002-0194.

Humorist to address Valley Writers

Humorist Mary Wakefield Buxton is scheduled to address the Valley Writers group at 7 p.m. Dec. 1 at Elm Parks Estates near Tanglewood.

The talk is free and open to the public.

Buxton is the author of "Help! I'm Being Held Captive in Virginia" and "To Love a Virginian." The title of her lecture is "The importance of Humor to the Writer."

MDA offering free shots for patients

The Muscular Dystrophy Association will again offer free flu shots for people who have any of the 40 neuromuscular diseases in its program.

The association will pay for inoculations administered by personal physicians or by physicians at the MDA's Roanoke clinic at the Roanoke Memorial Rehabilitation Center.
