THE TIPOFF

FOND REMEMBRANCES: Unlike many artists, Romare Bearden achieved recognition and financial success early in his career, receiving numerous honors and having his works included in the collections of every major museum in New York City and more than a dozen across the country. Bearden - a contemporary of Jacob Lawrence - often used his influence and power to help younger artists.

Tonight at 5 o'clock at the Harrison Museum of African American Culture, Sherman and Essie Edmiston of Essie Green Galleries, New York, will give a gallery talk about their friend, who died in 1988 at the age of 76.

A reception will follow, kicking off the opening of "The Joy of Living: Romare Bearden's Late Work," an exhibit of 19 selected works by Bearden at the museum through Jan. 8. There is no admission charge. Call 345-4818.

HOLIDAYS HEAD START: There's a good chance that you'll find something for someone on your holiday shopping list at the 11th annual Holiday in the Valley Arts and Craft Show, today through Sunday at the Salem Civic Center. The juried show, sponsored by the nonprofit Virginia Mountain Crafts Guild, features approximately 100 individual art and craft exhibitors, with many one-of-a-kind wares including toys, tree toppers and decorations, pottery, flags, paintings, metal and wood work, wearable art and jewelry, baskets, calligraphy, flags, lamp shades, stained glass and more. Local artists and craftspeople as well as from throughout the state and as far away as Alabama, Vermont and Florida will display their goods.

Be sure to stop by the special recycled crafts booth, which will carry functional, humorous or decorative crafts made from media normally found in a landfill. The recycled items - and there's no telling what may turn up among them - are the result of a special creative challenge issued to guild members this year. Revenues will be donated to the Virginia Mountain Crafts Guild Art Scholarship Fund.

The event opens at noon today and runs till 9 p.m.; Saturday hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sunday's are noon to 5 p.m. Admission is $2; parking is free. Call 375-3004.

ILLICIT LIZARDS: The Austin Lounge Lizards, premiere pranksters of acoustic music, will soon leap into Blacksburg as part of their latest Southeast mini tour. The quintet, known for its original material that combines hilarious lyrics with excellent musicianship and inventive arrangements, has been called "More fun than the law will soon allow."

Catch them while they're still legal. Sunday, 7:30 p.m., South Main Cafe, 117 South Main St. Advance tickets are $8; $10 at the door. Call 552-3622.
