The bomb, made from several household items placed in a closed plastic bottle, was thrown in a trash can outside the Winn-Dixie store at 1092 Bypass Road about 7:30 p.m.
"This type of bomb is very volatile. It can blow up immediately" and without warning, said Vinton Lt. W.F. Brown Jr.
The explosion was limited to the trash can, but a woman who was putting groceries into her car was treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital for an inner-ear injury. Police did not release her name.
Police said the juvenile parked outside the store and concocted the bomb in his car, then drove across the parking lot and put the bomb in the trash can. A few moments later, the bomb exploded.
"There was enough of an explosion to have taken his hand off," said Sgt. V.A. Vaught.
A witness who saw the boy put the soda bottle in the trash can identified him to police.
From the teen-ager's car, police recovered items apparently used to make the bomb. In the trash can, they found a partially melted plastic bottle and several rolled-up balls of charred aluminum foil - remnants of the bomb.
The juvenile is to be brought to court today and charged with manufacturing a bomb, a felony. Police did not release his name.
