LOSS COSTS BASSETT PIEDMONT CROWN

BASSETT - Fieldale-Collinsville rode strong free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter to a 51-47 Piedmont District victory over Bassett, giving Martinsville the district title.

The Cavaliers made 10 of 14 free throws in the decisive period, when Fieldale-Collinsville outscored the Bengals 22-8.

Bassett trailed by two points with nine seconds left, but a turnover ended the Bengals' hopes.

Cicely Becker had 16 points and Yvonne Hall added 15 for the Cavaliers.

Bassett got 12 points from Kim Hairston and 10 from Heather Burke.

Galax 56

GALAX - The Maroon Tide used a big third quarter to roll to a Mountain Empire District victory over the Eagles. The victory assured Galax of a tie with Narrows for the district crown and forced a one-game playoff Monday at a neutral site for the title and the top seed in the Mountain Empire tournament.

Jacyln Dickens and Tammy Cox accounted for most of the third-quarter damage, scoring 12 and eight points, respectively, and all but three of Galax's points in that period. Cox finished with a game-high 17 points and 11 rebounds. Dickens had 14 points, including two 3-pointers for the Maroon Tide (16-5, 8-2).

Rocky Gap (6-15, 4-6) was led by Nancy Tupper's 15 points.

Narrows 57

Grayson County 31

INDEPENDENCE - Suzanne Webb scored 18 of her game-high 23 points in the first half as the Green Wave secured a tie with Galax for first place in the Mountain Empire District, forcing a one-game playoff for the title.

Narrows (13-7, 8-2) opened the game with an 11-2 run and never looked back. Melissa Lucas finished with 10 points for the Green Wave.

Lindsay Carico scored 10 points for Grayson County (5-13, 4-6).

Rockbridge County 26

DALEVILLE - The Cavaliers outscored the Wildcats 21-2 in the first quarter en route to a Blue Ridge District victory.

Senior Summer Plunkett celebrated Lord Botetourt's Senior Night game with an 18-point performance. Sara Moore tossed in 17 points and Sarah Hicks poured in 12 as the Cavaliers (15-5, 8-2) locked up second place behind Salem in the Blue Ridge District.

Rockbridge (0-20, 0-10) was led by LaTosha Nules' 10 points.

The Wildcats take on William Byrd on Tuesday night in the district tournament at Northside. Lord Botetourt will play the winner of that game in a semifinal on Nov.10.

PH-Glade Spring 42

WYTHEVILLE - The Maroons' Shannan Crouse drilled a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left to force a tie and George Wythe rallied for the Hogoheegee District victory.

After Crouse's bomb, PH turned over the ball. With 2.3 seconds left, Tanya Cregger took a pass from Crouse to sink the winning layup.

Crouse finished with 10 points, six rebounds and five steals in her final home game. Lisa Garland had 13 rebounds to go with eight points for the Maroons (11-9, 9-7). PH, which went 15-for-20 from the free-throw line, was led by Christy Trent's 11 points.

NEW CASTLE - Chrissy Robertson, playing her final regular-season home game, scored a career-high 38 points to lead the Rockets past the Fighting Blues in the Pioneer District.

Robertson nailed four 3-pointers and led the transition game. Tracy Caldwell pulled down 12 rebounds for Craig ( 7-11, 6-6), most of them resulting in outlet passes to Robertson.

Robertson made 16 of 17 free throws and nine of 15 field-goal attempts.

Lindsey Coleman scored 22 points for Parry McCluer.

Bath County 49

Highland 22

HOT SPRINGS - Katie Hardbarger came off the bench to score 18 points and lead the Chargers past the Rams in the Pioneer District.

Hardbarger scored 10 points in the second quarter, as Bath County (5-15, 4-8) went on a 13-2 run to take a 19-4 halftime lead. Hardbarger, a freshman, was 8-of-10 from the floor in the game.

Highland (2-18, 0-12) was led by Amy Neil's 12 points.
