SALEM CLINCHES BLUE RIDGE TITLE WITH 62-54 WIN

LOW MOOR - Salem began the week knowing it controlled its own destiny and ended the week Thursday night by wrapping up the Blue Ridge District regular-season championship with a 62-54 victory at Alleghany.

The Spartans, who held a one-game lead over Lord Botetourt entering Thursday's action, built a 13-point halftime lead and held off the Mountaineers in the second half.

Shellie Johnson had 24 points to lead Salem (15-5 overall, 9-1 in the district) and Sara Palmer added 16 points, 10 of those in the fourth quarter.

Alleghany (8-12, 3-7) got 12 points from Melissa Page and 11 from Tasha Chapman.

Rockbridge County 26

DALEVILLE - The Cavaliers did all they could do to stay in the Blue Ridge race, but their lopsided victory was overshadowed by Salem's championship-clinching victory at Alleghany.

Lord Botetourt (15-5, 8-2) outscored the Wildcats 21-2 in the first quarter and sailed past the Wildcats. Senior Summer Plunkett led the Cavaliers with 18 points, Sarah Moore tossed in 17 and Sarah Hicks had 12.

Rockbridge (0-20, 0-10) was led by LaTosha Nules' 10 points.

Northside 51

The Terriers rallied from a nine-point first-quarter deficit and routed the Vikings in a Blue Ridge game.

Kristi Dyer had 12 of her 14 points in the second quarter for William Byrd (14-6, 7-3). The Terriers had 25 steals.

Terri Craig led Northside with 13 points.

NEW CASTLE - Chrissy Robertson, playing her last regular-season home game, scored a career-high 38 points to lead the Rockets past the Fighting Blues in the Pioneer District.

Robertson nailed four 3-pointers and led the transition game. Tracy Caldwell pulled down 12 rebounds for Craig (7-11, 6-6), most of them resulting in outlet passes to Robertson.

Robertson made 16 of 17 free throws and nine of 15 field-goal attempts.

Lindsey Coleman scored 22 points for Parry McCluer.

Glenvar 61

James River 25

BUCHANAN - The Knights jumped took an 11-8 first-quarter lead, but the Highlanders used two 20-point quarters to turn around the game and demolish James River in Pioneer District action.

Marilea Hale equaled James River's (6-14, 4-8) point total of 25 as she led all scorers. Erika Hale added 12 points and Toree Morris tossed in 11, including three 3-pointers to help keep Glenvar (18-2, 12-0) undefeated in district play.

Angie Johnson led the Knights with 13 points. James River travels to Craig County next week to take on the Rockets in the first round of the district tournament.
