LONGTIME ST. JUDE PASTOR LEAVES NEXT YEAR

The Rev. TOM MAGRI leaves the New River Valley on June 1 after 12 years at St. Jude Catholic Church in Radford. "It's going to be very difficult both for the parish and myself," "Father Tom" said this week.

The Richmond Diocese will reassign him to another church in Virginia's southern tier, he said, explaining that 12 years at one parish "is the maximum in our system."

Magri said his main goal at St. Jude has been "to see the community grow and be strong and be a source of outreach." Magri also oversaw the congregation's move from a small church on Tyler Avenue near Radford University to a new, much larger complex still being built just outside the city limits on Tyler Road (Virginia 177).

A Lynchburg native, Magri was ordained in 1979. He said he won't know where he's headed until early May.

Two other well-known New River Valley clergymen are retiring. The Rev. Dr. Ray Allen of Blacksburg Baptist Church steps down June 8 after 20 years. The Rev. Vernon Miller leaves Christiansburg Presbyterian Church on Nov. 20 after 26 years.
