U.N. PEACEKEEPERS TO LEAVE SOMALIA

The Security Council voted unanimously Friday to end the U.N. peacekeeping operation in Somalia by March 31, after months of open clan warfare stymied U.N. efforts to rebuild the nation.

The resolution noted that Somali leaders had failed to provide security for the humanitarian mission in a country devastated by famine and anarchy.

The withdrawal schedule was unclear, but a U.S. official said Washington wants it finished within 90 days.
