SIMMONS, WARRIORS WIN 17-7

RIDGEWAY - Jermaine Simmons accounted for 205 all-purpose yards and scored two second-half touchdowns to help Magna Vista get past Martinsville 17-7 in a Piedmont District football game Friday night.

The Warriors (5-4, 5-3) took a 3-0 halftime lead on a 33-yard field goal by John Tunnel, then opened up in the second half.

On the Warriors' first possession of the second half, Simmons went 68 yards for the score and the extra point put Magna Vista up 10-0.

Martinsville (4-5, 4-4) answered on its next possession. A long Bulldogs drive ended with Manti Venable taking it in from 13 yards with less than two minutes left in the third quarter. The extra point cut the Warriors' lead to 10-7.

Magna Vista then put the game away late in the fourth quarter. Facing a third-and-12 from deep in its own territory, quarterback Leroy Valentine hit Simmons for a 75-yard touchdown pass with three minutes, 24 seconds left to ice the victory.

Simmons finished with 140 yards rushing on 17 carries and also added 65 receiving yards.

Rockbridge County 34

William Byrd 13

LEXINGTON- Rockbridge County wore William Byrd down physically, and the Terriers (4-5, 1-4) never could get the ball moving, as the Wildcats (4-5, 3-2) rolled to their third Blue Ridge District victory.

Greg Stubblefield led the Rockbridge charge, throwing two touchdown passes in the opening half. Will Shepard caught Stubblefield's first touchdown strike in the first quarter and Clyde Moyerf was on the receiving end of the second touchdown pass.

Gary Tyree ran the ball 18 times for 192 yards, including two touchdown runs of 41 and 58 yards for the Wildcats.

Frank English guided William Byrd's offense with two touchdowns passes. Michael English caught a 65-yard scoring pass in the second quarter, pulling the Terriers to within a touchdown. Jamie Fuqua caught English's second touchdown, a 9-yard strike in the fourth quarter.

Giles 42

Grayson County 8

INDEPENDENCE - Raypheal Milton churned out 209 yards of total offense, rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another score as the Spartans won their 23rd consecutive game with a non-district blowout of the Blue Devils.

Milton rushed for 113 yards and completed three of six passes for 96 yards as Giles (9-0) moved to the brink of its second consecutive unbeaten regular season.

Most of Milton's damage came in the first two quarters. The Spartans used a 27-point second quarter to take a 35-0 lead. Grayson County (2-7) totaled 164 yards of total offense, 67 of that coming in the fourth quarter.

Milton put Giles on the board with a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Chris Ratcliffe opened the second-quarter deluge with a 3-yard touchdown run, followed by an 11-yard touchdown dash by Milton, a 4-yard scoring run by Raypheal's twin brother, Maurice, and a 26-yard touchdown pass from Raypheal Milton to Reggie Hoston.

Giles went ahead 42-0 early in the third quarter on a 2-yard run from Michael Biars, who came off the bench to rush for 69 yards.

Hoston had two catches for 79 yards.

Jason Byrd scored for Grayson County on a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Bassett 21

Fieldale-Collinsville 13

BASSETT - Clifford Wimbush was a standout on both sides of the ball as the Bengals notched a Piedmont District victory.

Wimbush scored three touchdowns, ran for 180 yards and intercepted two passes to lead Bassett (6-3, 5-3) to victory. His touchdowns came on runs of 11, 1 and 49 yards.

Fieldale-Collinsville (4-5, 3-5) got its touchdowns on a 1-yard run by Kevin Franklin and a 2-yard run by Brian Alley.

Covington 19

James River 10

BUCHANAN - Tom Luckett scored two of his three touchdowns in the final 4:16 of the first half to give the Cougars the lead for good in their Pioneer District victory.

Luckett, who gained 218 yards on 30 carries, scored on a 3-yard run to cut the score to 7-6 after the extra-point kick was blocked. After the kickoff, James River (2-7, 0-4) fumbled when Mark Whiting was hit after an 11-yard pickup.

Covington (4-5, 3-1) traveled 34 yards in 90 seconds to take a 12-7 lead on Luckett's 1-yard run.

James River's Michael Broughman made it 12-10 with a 27-yard field goal in the third quarter, but Covington sealed it with Luckett's 6-yard touchdown run with seven minutes renmaining.

Whiting finished with 134 yards.

Fort Chiswell 14

Bland County 10

BASTIAN - Kevin Beasley scored on a 2-yard run late in the third quarter and the Pioneers held on to upset Bland County and clinch at least a tie for the Mountain Empire District title.

The winning drive started after Bland County's Monty Matthews had kicked a 25-yard field goal to give the Bears (6-3, 3-1) a 10-7 lead.

Mike White returned the ensuing kickoff to the Fort Chiswell 48-yard line. Beasley's score capped a 10-play, 52-yard drive to give the Pioneers (5-4, 3-0) a 14-10 lead.

Bland County quarterback David Lambert was intercepted three times in the fourth quarter - all inside the Fort Chiswell 31-yard line. Lambert completed eight of 15 passes for 153 yards and one touchdown .

Fort Chiswell, which was outgained 256 to 167 in offensive yards, can win the district title outright next week at Max Meadows with a victory over Narrows. If Fort Chiswell loses to Narrows, there will be a three-way tie between Fort Chiswell, Bland County and Narrows for the district title.

Northwood 31

George Wythe 20

SALTVILLE - Greg Prater rushed for 98 yards on 18 carries and scored two second-half touchdowns to lead Northwood to the upset victory over George Wythe in a Hogoheegee District game.

Northwood (6-3, 3-4) trailed 20-14 at halftime, but shut out George Wythe 17-0 in the second half and held the Maroons (7-3, 6-2) to only 86 yards of total offense in the final two quarters.

Prater started the second half onslaught with a 62-yard punt return. The extra point failed, but Northwood tied the score at 20.

Northwood then took the lead in the fourth quarter when a six-play, 36-yard drive ended in an 18-yard run by Prater with 10 minutes left in the game. The Panthers added a 30-yard field goal by John Burgess with less than three minutes left to provide the final margin.
