ALEXANDER LEADS UVA IN EXHIBITION

Cory Alexander, who suffered a broken ankle in the first game and missed the rest of last season, scored 22 points and had 10 assists to lead the Virginia Cavaliers to a 99-85 men's basketball exhibition win over Court Authority Friday night at University Hall in Charlottesville.

Alexander, a junior point guard who already has announced he will turn pro after this season, had 14 points in the second half after the Cavaliers led only 41-39 at halftime. Harold Deane scored 19 points - 12 in the second half - for Virginia while Junior Burrough and Curtis Staples finished with 12 and 10, respectively. Chris Alexander pulled down 15 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who led only 81-75 with 5:17 left in the game. Virginia then went on a 14-4 run.

The Cavaliers play their second exhibition game of the preseason at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday against the Polish National Team at University Hall.

In other college news:

Virginia Tech's Ryan Williams and Virginia's Rafael Garcia are among 20 semifinalists for football's Lou Groza Collegiate Placekicker Award presented to the nation's most outstanding Division I-A kicker. The five finalists will be announced on Nov.10 with the winner announced on Dec.2.

Radford University's Ian Spooner, who returned to the soccer field this season after missing last year to work on his grades, capped a successful comeback by being named the Big South Conference player of the year in men's soccer.

Highlanders first-year coach Spencer Smith earned co-coach of the year honors. Both awards were handed out at the Big South awards banquet Friday morning.

Spooner, a forward from Oxford, England, returned with a flourish this fall by notching 16 goals and four assists to finish second in the league in scoring.

Smith took over a 4-13-3 squad that missed the Big South playoffs for the first time ever and posted an 11-6-2 record.

VMI's 1974 Southern Conference championship football team will be honored with its head coach Bob Thalman at halftime of today's game with James Madison in Lexington.

Approximately 40 members of the team returned to VMI for today's game and Friday night's banquet in Moody Hall.

The '74 Keydets finished 7-4 overall, 5-1 in the conference. They claimed the league championship with a 13-3 victory over East Carolina in the season finale. Earlier that season, VMI beat Virginia Tech in the Tobacco Bowl in Richmond.

Virginia Tech's men's team won two of its three doubles matches against Anderson at the Clemson Fall Tennis Classic. Adam Gottfried and Oliver Mayo, the Hokies' No.2 team, defeated Ayal Horowitz and Alex Sueur 8-4 while the No.3 team of Mark Tepes and Marek Pheil beat Kevin Donnavan and Blake Pearson 8-1.

The Hokies also won two of three doubles matches over a combination team from Clemson and Duke.

Tech's freshmen were the only winners in singles action. Pheil, a former Blacksburg High School standout, defeated Robert Wojcik 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 at No.4 singles and Tepes downed Donnavan 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 at No.5 singles.

Danny Edwards scored on a cutback run for a 30-yard touchdown with 4:21 remaining in the fourth quarter to give Virginia Tech's junior varsity football team a 30-24 win over Hargrave Military Academy.

Virginia Tech's women's basketball team will play its Maroon-Orange game Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum. The intrasquad game will follow a Camera Day session at 2 p.m., during which fans can have their pictures taken.

Georgia Southern eliminated VMI from the Southern Conference men's soccer tournament with a 2-0 first-round win at Greensboro, N.C. Chris Sklar had a goal and an assist for the Eagles (10-9-1). VMI is 5-9-1.

VMI forward Rich Daughtridge, who had 11 goals and five assists this season, was named the Southern Conference freshman of the year in men's soccer. Daughtridge finished the regular season tied for the Southern Conference scoring lead with 27 points.

John Sampers of regular-season champion Davidson was named player of the year. Davidson's Charlie Slagle was voted coach of the year.

Roanoke College upset fourth-seeded Guilford in the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference volleyball tournament with a 15-9, 15-8, 15-7 victory at Washington and Lee. The Maroons play top-seeded Eastern Mennonite in today's semifinals. Washington and Lee, which beat Emory & Henry 15-6, 15-1, 15-2, will play Bridgewater in the other semifinal.
