The Express, which beat Charlotte in a shootout on Tuesday, couldn't solve Greensboro goaltender Bill Horn in the format that sends shooters one-on-one against the opposing goaltender.
It was a tough loss for Roanoke goalie Dave Gagnon, who got the Express into the shootout by stopping 41 of 42 shots in regulation and the five-minute overtime.
Roanoke (4-3-1), which had its three-game winning streak broken, scored its only goal 8 minutes, 25 seconds into the game. With Roanoke working a 5-on-3 power play, defenseman Dave Stewart ripped a drive from between the circles past Horn.
Roanoke nursed the 1-0 lead until the 13:20 mark of the second period, when Ron Pasco beat Gagnon to tie the score at 1.
The contest, played before 8,112 fans at the Greensboro Coliseum, was the usual chippy affair between the two arch-rivals. The two clubs combined for 123 penalty minutes, most of which were dished out by referee John Sheiry during a mini-brawl in the first period in which three fights were occuring concurrently.
ICE CHIPS: Express enforcer Jason Clarke and Greensboro hitman Trevor Senn should know each other's brand of deoderant by now. After squaring off twice in Roanoke on Oct.21, the two went twice again Friday and both got tossed. Senn (105) and Clarke (77) rank 1-2 in the league in penalty minutes. ... Express forward Robin Bouchard, who took 19 stitches around his right eye after being cut by a skate Tuesday, is still suffering blurry vision and may eventually have to go on the 14-day injured-reserve list. ... The Express has picked up forward Martin Laitre on waivers from Hampton Roads. Toughness tops Laitre's resume - the 6-foot, 220-pound Quebec native pummeled Steve Anderson so severely during an Admirals' preseason practice that it took 68 stitches to close the cuts on Anderson's face. ... Roanoke entertains long-time nemesis Raleigh tonight at 7:30 at the Roanoke Civic Center. The IceCaps have beaten the Express seven straight times, including five in a row in Roanoke, dating back to last season.
