There will be a three-way playoff for the New River District girls' basketball championship starting tonight when Blacksburg takes on Carroll County at Christiansburg High at 7 p.m.

The playoff became a necessity when Blacksburg defeated Carroll County 52-39 Thursday, leaving those two teams tied with Christiansburg. All three teams finished with 2-2 league records.

Franklin County will play host Wednesday at 7 p.m. to G.W. Danville in a first-round Group AAA Northwest Region volleyball game. At the same time, Patrick Henry travels to Albemarle for another first-round contest.

The winners of the opening games will advance to the semifinals scheduled next Saturday at C.D. Hylton High School. If Franklin County wins, it will play a semifinal game at 2 p.m. while the Patriots would play in a noon contest. Finals are scheduled that afternoon at 5 p.m.

Galax and Narrows will hold a one-game playoff Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Fort Chiswell to decide the regular season champion of the Mountain Empire District girls' basketball race.
