COSTNER PLAYS A KEY ROLE IN THE SUCCESS OF `THE WAR'
More than one or two things are familiar about `The War," a new film
directed by Jon Avnet of "Fried Green Tomatoes" fame. The Spanish moss and
live oak - sheltering the wild dreams of a couple of kids trying to understand
their father - evoke "The Great Santini." The ragtag hang hanging out near the
junkyard conjures up "Stand by Me."
And though what this film has to say is quite simple and not entirely new,
it packs a surprising wallop.
